BCAA IV giving in the head trauma

a study was carried out to research whether supplementation of the chain amino acid of the branch (BCAA) to the patient with the head trauma (traumatic brain injury/TBI) will increase cognitive restoration and influenced the concentration of plasma tirosin that was the precursor of the neurotransmitter katekolamin as well as the concentration of plasma triptofan that was the precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin on the brain.

This study was carried out randomly with the control plasebo that involved 41 patients of the brain injury with the age in general 49.5 years with the minimal awareness situation or vegetatif posttrauma. The patient randomly met BCAA intravenous 19,6 g/the day (n=22) or plasebo isonitrogen IV (n=19) for 15 days. At the end the intervention, the Disability Rating Scale score (Drs) that was stated as log10 the score Drs in a significant manner improved to the BCAA group compared with the group plasebo (log10 the score of Drs 1,365±0,08 to 1,294±0,05; P < ,001 to the group of BCAA vs log10 the score of Drs 1,373±0,03 became 1,37±0,03;p 1,37±0,03;p>0,05 to the group plasebo).

as the addition, 68.2% the patient with the BCAA group recovered from the situation vegetatif or the minimal awareness. So as the researcher concluded that BCAA IV supplementation could increase restoration from the situation vegetatif or the minimal awareness to the patient post TBI. Beforehand also had been carried out by the study concerning the effect of BCAA IV giving on the patient TBI where 40 patients with the age in general 32 years with TBI randomly received BCAA IV supplementation 19,6 g/the day (n=20) or plasebo isonitrogen IV (n=20). The main parameter this study was the Disability Rating Scale score (Drs) and the concentration of BCAA plasma, tirosin and triptofan.

results showed that after 15 days, the score Drs improved in a significant manner to the group plasebo (p p<0,05 vs basalt) and to the BCAA supplementation group (p p<0,01 vs basalt), but the difference of the improvement of the score Drs was significant between the two groups (p p<0,004). The concentration of plasma tirosin increased to the group with BCAA supplementation, and the concentration triptofan increased to the patient that got plasebo. From this study was concluded that BCAA supplementation could improve the score Drs without causing the effect of the negative on tirosin and triptofan
