Consumption of wine may help lower blood pressure and improve heart function in lab rats. Mitchell Seymour of Cardioprotein Research Laboratory, University of Michigan, United States, assessing the effects of ordinary grapes on rats with hypertension when given a salty diet.




Some rats were given powdered diet of red wine, green and purple as well as high-salt diet. Others were given grape powder and low-salt diet. "The powder contains the same nutrients in fresh grapes," Seymour said, as quoted by Reuters.

After 18 weeks, mice with a diet of wine, low blood pressure, better heart function, inflammation and signs of heart muscle damage is less than rats that were given salt without wine.
